HON. (MRS.) MARIA INIBIYE OWI AN ACCOMPLISHED ADMINISTRATOR

Woman of virtues, an achiever and a woman who believes in the empowering of women. She strongly believes that when you train the Girl Child, you train and empower a whole Nation. Mrs. Maria Inibiye Owi is a Nigerian by birth; born into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Akingi on August 28, 1952. She hails from Fish Town, Akassa in the Brass Local Government of Bayelsa State.This icon of motherhood that is widowed with children and grandchildren was married to Mr. Preboye Owi who until his demise in November 2001 was a Sterling Bank Administrator and former Assistant General Manager of the Defunct African Continental Bank Plc.


Besides being a skilled events decorator and a caterer par excellence, Mrs. M. I. Owi is an educationist by profession and has exhibited her academic prowess in various institutions of learning including Christ the King School Oromineke, Stella Maris College and Government Girl's Secondary School, Oromide, all in Port Harcourt.


Mrs. Maria I. Owi is a graduate of English Language and Religious Studies (both of the Rivers State College of Education and the University of Port Harcourt). She has served as an academic teaching staff of Government Secondary School, Borikiri and Community Secondary School, Nkolu Port-harcourt where she taught English Language and Literature in English respectively. It is instructive to note that Mrs. Maria Owu was a Supervisor with the Bayelsa State Post Primary Schools Board, Kaiama Zonal Office from 1996 to 1998.


She worked as Secretary of the Family Support Programme in Brass Local Government Area from 1998 to 1999. Apart from being team oriented, Mariam as fondly called by her peers and friends has got great analytical skills with an enduring poise to assume responsibilities within and outside her scope of work.


In 2006, she was appointed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and served in Ebonyi, Imo and Akwa Ibom States respectively.


During her five-year tenure, she fearlessly conducted successful Voters Registration Exercises as well as the General Elections in 2007 and 2011 respectively. She also conducted the Oru_West State and Federal Constituencies' re-run elections in Imo State.



Notable for her transparency, integrity and doggedness at ensuring corporate best practices, she was detailed by INEC to supervise the 2009 Calabar South Governorship re-run elections in Cross River State as well as the 2010 Delta State Governorship re-run elections. To her credit is the status of ECOWAS Observer, Ghana's Presidential re-run and run-of elections (December, 2008).


It behoves one to know that Mrs. Maria Inibiye Owi is an astute administrator whose legacies would remain ever-green. Staff welfare and infrastructural development were of utmost priority to her everywhere she went. At Ebonyi State, she renovated the once dilapidated Izzi Local Government Council Office of INEC and laid the foundation for the INEC Chapel. In INEC Imo State, she rejuvenated management and increased staff productivity. She ensured a facelift of dilapidated infrastructure both at the headquarters and the Local Government offices and also made sure the safeguard of lives and property of the Commission. She doggedly pursued the employment of security personnel for the zonal stores, Local Government Areas and the Head Office. While in Imo and Akwa Ibom States, she led the vanguard for a clean and green working environment by ensuring the planting of trees and grasses, thus adding aesthetics to the commission's base. She saw to the establishment of the INEC Christian Fellowship in Imo State and equally built a multi-purpose hall for the Commission in Akwa Ibom State.


Soon after her meritorious service at INEC, Mrs. Maria I. Owi returned to the Rivers State Civil Service where she retired as an Academic Director with the Community Secondary School, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo.


However, her ingenuity in the management of electoral matters earned her recognition by the Bayelsa State Government. Thus, in July 2012, she was appointed Commissioner in charge of Planning Research, Strategies and Training at the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).


Mrs. Owi is a staunch member of the National Council of Women's Society (NCWS) and has held the position of Secretary and President, respectively of Brass Local Government Chapter as well as Treasurer, NCWS Bayelsa State. She is also a member of the Nigerian Association of Women Entrepreneur (NAWE).


She is renowed for her advocacy in good leadership and human capacity development.


Mrs. Maria Inibiye Owi is a God-fearing Christian and core disciplinarian. Undoubtedly, she is a virtuous woman and a philanthropist who has touched so many lives.
